How to choose a dining table
The dining table is where an Indian home comes together, from weekday dinners to festival feasts. Size, shape and surface matter more than anything else.
Size and seating
Allow 60 cm of table edge per person and at least 90 cm of clearance around the table for chairs to slide back. A 210 cm table seats six comfortably and eight at a squeeze. Round tables of 140 cm or more make conversation easier and suit square rooms.
Choosing a surface
Solid wood with a hard-wax oil resists heat and stains better than lacquer and can be spot-repaired. Live-edge slabs bring nature indoors; each one is unique, so small natural cracks are stabilised rather than hidden.
Chairs and storage
Choose chairs with a seat height of about 46 cm for a 76 cm table. A sideboard or bar cabinet nearby keeps serveware close and makes entertaining effortless.
